Mama Bear Mentor: Nyssa Hasty
November 17, 2025
Within Mama Bear Care, we have a team who are uplifting, encouraging, and open to new ways to support our precious mama bears. Since our mission is to empower mamas to embrace their Mama Bear role, equipping them to advocate for their special babies with fierce love and tender care, Beverly (our Founder and CEO) realized that some of our veteran mama bears who have fought hard and loved hard were willing and eager to help other mamas with a prenatal diagnosis. Therefore, a new role was created, our “Mama Bear Mentor,” and we are so excited to have three women coming on board to pour back into our Mama Bear Care community.
Today, we are eager to share about one such mama bear, Nyssa Hasty, who we featured a while back in our blog –> here. Nyssa fought hard for her sweet Colette who was born with Trisomy 6p unique and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. We are glad to have Nyssa on board in our new Mama Bear Mentor role, and appreciate her willingness to share Colette’s story and use her experience to encourage other mama bears.

Our interview included below focuses on each team member’s life, family, and motivation for being a part of Mama Bear Care, as well as a few fun facts about their lives.

Nyssa, will you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am a bereaved mama of Colette Cook Hasty. She was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, 18 weeks into my pregnancy and then later, Trisomy 6p Unique. Less than 50 people in the USA have Trisomy 6p Unique. As soon as the words “hypoplastic left heart syndrome” came out of the MFM’s mouth, the next words were to schedule the abortion, out of state. I chose from the moment I heard of her difference, life! I knew God created her in His image and her worth was more than rubies. After being turned down from every medical option in my state, I moved to Austin, TX to deliver her at Dell Children’s Hospital. I had almost two full days with her, before I was informed she was too sick to qualify for life saving surgery; her blood was no longer clotting and her organs, shutting down. I was able to hold her in her last moments on earth. Colette has given me the ability to fight for other infants and choose their life. I’d do the whole journey again, if I got those two days with Coley-Girl. They truly were priceless. I’ve held onto the story of Meshad, Shadrach and Abendigo, in Daniel 3:18, paraphrased, “and if not, He is still good.”
Tell us more about your family?
I am a divorce mom of one, Colette. I am blessed to be near my family in Arizona, with an amazing group of Christian women, who are sisters in the beautiful Sonoran desert! I have two fuff-butt cats, Maisie May and Elsie June and am going to school to finish my Bachelors!
What is something funny that no one would guess about you?
I finally went to my first concert, at 38, last month, to see CAIN!
What is your favorite drink?
Coffee. All day. Any kind. Anyway. It’s a love language!
What is your favorite board game?
I don’t play a lot of them, honestly! But I always loved the game, “Pig Mania” as a kid. Rolling “makin’ bacon” always brought out the giggles.
What is your top 3 favorite podcasts/books/musical artists/movies?
My top three podcasts are, The Autumn Miles Show, WHOA That’s Good and the Jenny Allen Podcast. It was hard to get it down to three!
How long have you been associated with Mama Bear Care?
Since my pregnancy with my daughter, Colette, around Spring/Summer 2023.
Why did you join Mama Bear Care’s mission?
I joined because I choose life for every infant, no matter the diagnosis’ or situation. Each one is a beautifully created child in the image of God and has limitless worth. I believe no matter how brief or long their life is, God does incredible work on each one of us through these babies. He truly brings beauty from ashes (Isaiah 61:3).
What is the most important thing you have done with Mama Bear Care?
That’s a hard one to choose. Mama Bear gave me the strength to fight for my daughter and my pregnancy. They have offered free counseling to me as a bereaved Mama. I’ve been able to love on other Mamas walking similar, hard, stories and been given many opportunities to speak on choosing life. Mama Bear hasn’t done one thing for me; they’ve done immeasurable things!

Thank you, Nyssa, for sharing about your life, your family, and your passion for Mama Bear Care! Also, thank you for joining for being such an essential part of Mama Bear Care!
